In Reverence of Rosemary Essential Oil

Found all over the world, it is mostly found in culinary delights like slow cooked lamb with a strong history in Europe and the Middle East. What are the benefits of Rosemary?

The leaves provide the odour through resin which is extracted for the essential oils, rather than the delicate light blue flowers that rosemary blossoms. Rosemary comes from the family of plants like lavender, thyme, patchouli and sage (lamiaceae). 

In folk medicine rosemary has been used to alleviate symptoms such as headache, stomachache, rheumatic pain, nervous agitation, improvement of memory, hysteria, depression, as well as physical and mental fatigue (1). Rosemary has been classified ‘safe’ for various uses from researched studies.

  1. Sharpen the mind and memory inhalation of rosemary can improve mood and cognitive function according to various studies (2). There is even a suggestion that it could ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s patients (4). 

  2. You can do it, stress and anxiety can prevent us from taking action, but the sipping of rosemary tea can provide the uplift to take action (2,6). 

  3. Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties can clear the skin for acne and dermatitis, but also clear bad breath when added to water and swished in the mouth. Studies show the importance of using rosemary in meats for food preparation to keep the meat digestible for humans (7). 

  4. Soothes sore muscles and neuropathic pain that is cause by a disease or lesion at a point on the nervous system may be eased with the taking of rosemary in a ingestible form (please do not take it without medical supervision), and studies on mice show it has an analgesic effect especially when combined with other medications (2). However, simply rubbed on the skin can provide a warming relaxant for sore muscles, when added to a carrier oil like grapeseed. 

  5. Antidepressant effects have been shown in some studies for those with depression (2). This could be connected to the Greek and Roman traditions that rosemary provides a spiritual uplift that has inspired poetry and art to express the Divine(3). 

Do not use it if pregnant or breastfeeding, or with children under 2 years of age. It should also be avoided if there is a history of epilepsy or seizures, or with a current fever. Keep dilution at 2% or lower (5). 

How to use Rosemary

Studying or presenting for work clearly with a ratio of rosemary, ylang ylang and lavender as 5:3:2 into a diffuser with water, is a wonderful way to get on with your studies or be stage ready for an online presentation. 

Energise yourself with a gentle rollerball blend of rosemary, eucalyptus and lemon myrtle combined with coconut oil, or grapeseed oil if sensitive. Use the ratios 15:20:5 to get a revitalising zest. 

Grounded sharpness when the balance needs a bit more earthy spice, then use 5 drops of rosemary with 3 black pepper and 1 of clove to awaken your wits for the action needed.
