Welcome the Wonders of Blue Cypress essential oil
Feb 27, 2022The beautiful Australian blue conifer trees produce an aroma in their wood - the twigs, leaves and stems. From this blue tree is a light woody and citrus aroma - not colours you would expect for such scent! This is considered a grounding oil when inhaled and has been deployed as a first aid remedy for skin complaints and emotional distress.
The Callitris intratropica trees grow in the Northern Territory of Australia near Kakadu and northern Queensland (2). It is a blue coloured oil so keep those crisp clean whites away when using it!
What are the benefits of Blue Cypress?
As is common, Western scientific research has a long journey to go before it validates some of the health and beneficial claims for this delightful aroma and plant. The intuitive trusts the knowledge of traditional wisdom, but you follow your own response to the scent as to its benefits for you.
- Grounding and clearing effect when inhaled or smelled on nervous, flighty or distressed emotional states. This can clear the airwaves and mind to feel more grounded. Australian aromatherapists advise this can be supportive as a ‘first aid’ aroma to calm similar to chamomile.
- Ease muscle aches and pains when rubbed into the areas of concern. Ensure that the essential oil is diluted with a carrier oil such as calendula, sweet almond or grapeseed.
- Anti-inflammatory for skin that could ease burns, hives, diaper rash and other ‘hot’ skin complaints if diluted and appropriately applied to the skin. When it comes to that feeling it can also be used for mozzie bites and This was used by Australian First Nations peoples for such treatment, and now there is a patent pending on an oil for such treatments (2, 3). Is a patent enough scientific evidence with so few studies?
- Anti-viral skin issues such as herpes, common warts, cold sores and shingles are proclaimed to be improved by the essential oil but be wary of skin sensitivity with this. Always use a carrier oil and test the skin in a small patch first.
This is not Cypress oil from the Mediterranean! These are very different oils. Blue Cypress is thick, viscous and blue!
