The Healing Benefits of Clary Sage

aroma Oct 24, 2022

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is named after the Latin word “to save, to heal”(3). It has been used since the Middle Ages for medicinal properties with its aroma and is known for uplifting the mind and emotions.

Clary Sage comes from the Lamiaceae botanical family which also has lavender, mint, rosemary, patchouli, basil and thyme. The essential oil is produced from the petals of soft pastel pinks, blues and purples.  Although historically considered historically a ‘woman’s’ essential oil, it is very beneficial to men too for its mood-balancing benefits that harmonise the mind and body.

  •  Dispels nervous tension that can include depression, anxiety, PMS and insomnia(1)
  • Tonifies menstruation and menopause(2) and boosts circulation (4)
  • Relieve joint pain and muscle spasms including plantar fasciitis, sciatica and PMS (3)
  • Calms the mind, reduces stress and soothes indecisive feelings by allowing the heart to settle and focus on balance (3). This in turn creates a sense of peace that can return vitality to a person.
  • Reduces the intensity of physical sensations by releasing feelings of worry and stress, thus allowing the body to relax (3).
  • Aids digestion when massaged over the abdomen (4).
  • Aphrodisiac which restores libido and vitality (4)

Contraindications: Do not use it if pregnant as can contribute to early labour. Do not drink alcohol whilst using clary sage as it can exaggerate intoxication behaviours and hangovers. Dilute to 2.5% to avoid adverse skin reactions.

How to use Clary Sage

  • Physical relief from muscle spasms by diluting it in a base carrier oil (we like grapeseed) and adding 5 drops of clary sage into a bath and soak for at least 10 minutes.
  • Stress Relief Inhaler: Using an aroma diffuser with water drop 1 x clary sage, 2 x lavender, and 3 x sweet orange.
  • Soothe a broken heart and inhale clary sage with rose essential oil, palo santo and lavender.

Nid loves to use Clary Sage in some of her candle blends to bring harmony into the space. Combined to intentionally create calm, clear negative impulses so that decisions can be taken from the heart. The Ene candle from the Passion Series includes clary sage with lemon balm, patchouli, sandalwood and lavender.

Clary Sage is a mid-to-base note in balancing aromas. This means that the scent will often come up later in the smells of a blend, and it will hold a deeper invitation to settle after an initial flowery fragrance is partnered with it. It blends well with bergamot, jasmine, lavender, sweet orange, ylang-ylang, lemongrass, sandalwood, palo santo, frankincense and Roman chamomile.

If you are interested in one of my bespoke blends that align with your intention and energetic shifts, then let me know. A candle brings ritual, but a bottled blend may be more appropriate to your setup. So get in touch and find out!
